The bicycle patrol was formed in July of 1985. The purpose of the formation of this unit was to further enhance and promote “ community oriented policing”. By providing the benefits of a traditional “beat patrol officer” and allowing more one-on-one contact with the residents, merchants and visitors to the City of Grosse Pointe. Much positive feedback has been received.
The use of the bicycle patrol in our parks, shopping districts, alleyways, and areas not readily accessible by motorized patrol units has proven to be very worthwhile. Currently there are 6 officers trained as Police mountain bike operators in addition to their regular duties. The specialized unit performs all normal patrol and back-up functions which include vehicle lockouts, parking enforcement, investigation of suspicious persons and vehicles, assistance at accidents and medical runs and participation in community events such as fireworks, national walk to school day, parades and safety programs.
The specialized bicycle patrol is an important and effective crime-fighting tool. The unit fits in perfectly with the community-policing concept, especially by bridging the gap between the police and the youth of the community.
In 1999, the bicycle patrol participated in an exchange program with the Windsor Ontario Police Department. This agency was the first Department from the United States to ever have a joint venture with our Windsor neighbors. Our officer’s rode patrol on their bicycles with the Windsor bike officers over a period of three months. In return, the Windsor officers came to the United States and participated in community events in the City of Grosse Pointe and participated with our officers in the Woodward Dream Cruise.
